El Cholo (In The Beginning) is the name of a program Joe Frank produced as part of the series Work In Progress. It was originally broadcast in 1992.

Synopsis

A Nicaraguan man talks about his life. He grew up with musician grandfather in Nicaragua. Castrating and slaughtering a pig. Slaughtering cows. Coming to the US on the bus. His rebellious sister, sniffing glue, stealing bikes, then cars. Breaking into houses. Mugging people. His mother becomes ill. His sister gets attacked by a jealous boyfriend. His sister skips bail and his mother loses her business and they get thrown out. His sister robs their house and the neighbors. She overdoses. He and friends steal his mother's car and run away to San Francisco. They get mugged in a cheap hotel, try to rip off a Chinese restaurant but are intercepted. He becomes abusive to his girlfriend. He gets arrested trying to pull her off a bus in Tijuana. Getting picked up by men. Wanting to escape from Los Angeles.
